do Parto ("Birth Friends" in english) is a website
based in São Paulo, Brazil dedicated to informing other
women about childbirth as a natural process. The website, www.amigasdoparto.com.br,
offers articles, World Health Organization guidelines for normal
birth, birth stories, birth photos as well as on-line counselling
and referall services.
It
was founded by mothers, each with different birth experiences
but all with a shared passion for the subject. In a country
famous for having one of the highest c-section rates in the
world, a source of reliable information about childbirth was
already desperately needed.
Private
hospitals in Brazil commonly have c-section rates as high
as 90%.
So-called normal births (10%) are usually packed with interventions
(such as epidurals and episiotomies) not based on good scientific
evidence.
Women who want a normal or natural birth often have a difficult
time finding doctors or nurses who´ll respect their
wishes.
